“Beverly Hills, 90210” actress Shannen Doherty has been battling cancer since 2020. It started with a breast cancer diagnosis, but since that time, the cancer has spread into her bones and even her brain.
On her podcast “Let’s Be Clear,” Doherty recently opened up about the current status of her health journey. As she shared what’s next for her with her cancer treatment, she had to stop talking to get ahold of her emotions and try to wipe away the tears.
Doherty explained, “I am having to go back on chemo, and it’s really hard. Like, the idea of going through that all over again has wrecked me.”
If you know anyone who has had chemo, you know that it’s an unpleasant process. The chemo can have negative side effects that greatly impact a patient’s life, but it’s also necessary for many people fighting cancer.
It isn’t just the chemo that’s “wrecked” Doherty though. It’s what chemo and hospitals represent for her.
She clarified that while she knows she has stage 4 cancer and that “it’s really serious,” it’s harder for her to deal with that knowledge when she’s going to the hospital for chemo. She explained, “It becomes very real in an incredibly different way.”
Another thing that makes this step difficult for her is that she doesn’t know how long she will need to be on chemo this time.
Despite her sadness about getting chemo, she’s also grateful for it. She explained, “It’s scary. At the same time, I’ve gotta say, there is some positivity there, and the positivity is that because my molecular structure of my cancer cells changed recently, it means there’s a lot more protocols for me to try. So there is hope mixed with my own bit of sadness.”
Doherty described herself as “a control freak,” which makes everything she’s going through right now even more difficult for her to handle. Currently, she doesn’t have control over her health or her personal life. Not only is Doherty battling cancer, but she’s also going through a divorce from Kurt Iswarienko.
